Biographical Note

Séamas Ó Saothraí has lived in County Wicklow for over thirty years. He served in the Army during the Emergency and later while a civil servant in the Department of Education attended evening lectures at TCD. His writings and translations have been published by the Stationery Office, by RTE where for fourteen years he worked as a staff journalist, and by the Royal Irish Academy where he was dictionary archivist until his early retirement.

A former registrar of the National Gallery and the author of its centenary history in Irish, he has addressed local historical societies in places as far apart as Bandon in County Cork and Cushendall in the Glens of Antrim.

He received the Piaras Béaslaí Commemorative Award in the 1991 Oireachtas Competitions for a biography of the Rev. Dr William Neilson, linguist and Gaelic grammarian. More recently he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries.
