GREYSTONES ARCHAEOLOGICAL & HISTORICAL SOCIETY JOURNAL VOLUME 8
• £1200 for the loss of a daughter
• £750 for the loss of a wife
• £300 for the loss of a child
When determining the level of award to be paid for a wife who
had been lost, the High Court decided that if she was not a wage
earner, the husband could only claim a sum representing the
value of her services to him - this ruling of that time would not be
applied today. Minors only received their awarded compensation
when they reached 21 in accordance with the law at that time
which required it to be held in trust for them until they ‘were of
age’ i.e. 21, with inflation diminishing over time the amount they
actually received.
Radio Officer Broadfoot
Undoubtedly the hero of the MV Princess Victoria incident
was Radio Officer David Broadfoot who remained at his post for
over 6 hours, sending out over 54 messages and forgoing the
chance of escape in the final minutes to maintain
communications. He was justifiably awarded the George Cross
posthumously.
