          Early workings

              As early as 2500BC it is believed that Bronze age mining for
          copper was in hand around the Avoca area. Then about 1000AD
          corn was being milled using a horizontal water mill in a valley in
          Timore townland.

              The principal activity was agriculture, mainly grazing, using
          the  Booley  system  described  in  the  Brehon  Laws.  Cattle  and
          sheep  were  grazed  in  high  pasture  land  during  the  summer
          period, then the flocks and herds brought down to lower milder
          pastures in the more severe winter months.
